Identifying the best security procedures to implement can be difficult to determine in any healthcare setting, but an assisted living environment presents more unique challenges. These communities are not only a place where patients receive medical attention, but it’s also where they live, eat and sleep. As a 24/7 operation, around the clock protection is crucial, however it’s equally as important to ensure that security measures do not interrupt residents’ daily routines.

A North Carolina assisted living community realized these hurdles and recognized that they needed to upgrade to more advanced security systems to improve the comfort and safety for its residents and staff. To help, the community leaders turned to Johnson Controls as a partner to implement and maintain a fully integrated security system.

Unique Design Within the Integration Process

Delivering unparalleled patient care alongside an exceptional resident experience is a daunting task. Residents in this North Carolina community had especially high expectations for community leaders to meet in terms of ensuring that they felt as at-home as possible all while addressing their specific security needs. For example, in the case of a suspicious act or crime within a living space, residents expected documented evidence of the incident as soon as possible. However, without connecting critical security systems such as access control and visitor management, the community had difficultly providing incident reports in a timely manner. Community leaders needed to identify and implement a fully integrated security strategy to create a more comfortable and safe environment for residents, staff and visitors.

As a single-source security solution provider, Johnson Controls built an integrated platform which connected key security capabilities with building controls. Real-time location systems, video surveillance and access control were able to work together as a cohesive security management system alongside building components like lighting and physical entryways. This unique design provided security that the community didn’t previously have. The new network of cameras were able to identify issues earlier and alert vehicle gates in the campus parking lot in the event of an emergency. Lighting could also be adjusted to help guide people to safety if needed. While the community continued to have security on staff, the advanced implementations helped residents feel secure without sacrificing the quality of living that they desired.

Efficient Systems Increase Security and Simplify Staff Time

Today, the assisted living community can document events faster, but more importantly, they can provide improved protection for residents, staff and visitors. The key has been a comprehensive approach that connects several technologies, going beyond traditional physical security measures. By managing multiple systems through one system, the community’s security personnel have distinct information and simplified control at their fingertips. This has resulted in less down time and increased efficiencies in staff time.
