You’ve just received news that your business has been burglarized. As your team is working to assess the impact, you grapple to understand the extent of the damage – and even wonder about the intent of the perpetrators. What do you do? Here are the critical steps to take once the damage from a burglary is done.
- Notify the police and other appropriate authorities. In the event of a business burglary, notify law enforcement authorities immediately. Provide the address of the burglary along with the following information: (a) the nature of any potential injuries or hazards that exist as a result of the break-in, (b) any description of vehicles, persons or other evidence involved in the crime.
- Contact your insurance company. Make preliminary contact with your insurance company to make them aware of the incident. Provide the date and time of the incident, and a preliminary summary of the crime. Mention any known injuries and damage to property. Your insurance company may schedule a visit by a claims adjuster, or provide other instructions for filing a claim.
- Take a top-to-bottom inventory and accounting of assets. Have each employee conduct a thorough inspection of their work areas, and have each department manager produce a detailed report of departmental losses. Get an accounting of all computers and electronic equipment. Take inventory of materials, work-in-progress and finished goods, and document any signs of tampering, vandalism or theft of business documents or files.
