Learn About the General Use of Video Analytic Software in a Video Surveillance System:

Video analytics is the practice of using software algorithms to detect, classify, and track objects or persons.

Analytics is implemented as software or hardware. It is either built into the camera (at-the-edge—that provides entry points into the enterprise or the service provider core networks) or centralized in the video processing systems, like DVRs, NVRs, or servers.

The application of video analytics is making video security systems smarter and more streamlined than ever. From reporting people count to traffic management to analysis of activity by time of day and other variables, video analytics has brought a higher level of intelligence to business security.

How it Works:

The video analytics technology works in the following manner:

video analytics

  1. The analytics algorithm searches for and captures relevant bits of information.

  2. This information is examined and categorized on the basis of the trend identified.

  3. The information analyzed is turned into actionable insights.

  4. The recommended actions, along with supporting information, are transmitted to the surveillance systems or people monitoring them

  5. This helps systems and authorities in identifying security breach patterns and preventing them.

In the video above, we see cars and people highlighted in yellow. We also see the right direction of the roundabout, highlighted in green. As is evident in the video, the customer has created virtual trip wires with arrows and directional paths. A car traveling the wrong way on the path will trigger the virtual trip wire and alert the system by highlighting it in red.

Why Video Analytics?

Integrating the surveillance systems with the video analytics solution adds value to a customer’s business operations. Video analytics helps customers gain better insights into their business by:
why video analytics
  1. Offering traffic intelligence by time of day

  2. Analyzing traffic counts, dwell times, wait times, and more

  3. Maximizing the effectiveness of retail floor plans

  4. Understanding employee and vendor traffic patterns

  5. Monitoring employee and department performance

  6. Tracking open/close performance of multiple locations

  7. Managing supply chain

  8. Providing powerful and comprehensive reporting capabilities

Video Motion Detection

Video motion detection (VMD) is a way of defining activity and analyzing images in a scene to detect visual changes. This motion detection feature can be programmed to define an area of a scene for event detection purposes.

Here, you see a common area highlighted in green. Yellow outlines objects and people moving in and out of the area. A customer can set the trip wire to a certain amount of time. A person or object remaining in the area beyond the allotted time will trigger the alarm, indicating it in red to alert the customer.

Dynamic Masking

Dynamic masking is a practice associated with Video Motion Detection. It enables virtual masking of individual areas of interest while ignoring areas of unwanted motion in a scene. This helps conserve video, especially in outdoor applications.
